This is part 4 of a series of blogs on feature story ideas.

Freelance writers and reporters all face the same question at some point: where do strong story ideas come from? Whether you’re pitching an editor or interviewing for a role, your ability to generate relevant ideas can open doors—or close them.

Editors aren’t just looking for good writing. They’re looking for insight—how you see the world, spot patterns, and turn everyday moments into stories readers care about. That’s why preparation matters.

The ideas that follow are designed to help you land assignments across a variety of publications and audiences. Editors often ask for story ideas to test your creativity and curiosity, so having a few ready can set you apart.

Over time, you’ll develop your own instinct for finding stories. But until then—and even after—having a go-to list can spark new ideas and keep you ready when opportunity comes.
