Two one-day workshops to be offered in Sopron, Hungary, Oct. 19, will allow on participants to polish their professional skills as a writer or photographer.

The workshops are a convenient add-on for participants in the Crisis Publishing Initiative, but are also open to registrants who do not attend the conference.

The Crisis Publishing Initiative is a conference for Christians in publishing on the front lines, as they seek to find the truth in chaotic situations and publish the information their readers need in order to respond as those called to be light and salt in a fractured world.

The “Write for Publication,” workshop will be taught by Dr. Miriam Adeney, a professor at Seattle Pacific University and prolific author. She will discuss how to refine and strengthen the writing skills for both the new and experienced writers.

Through instruction, exercises, and writing labs, participants will discover how to make their writing interesting, organized, biblical, appropriate, researched, and marketable. Whether for newspapers, magazines, books, study guides, or blog posts, this workshop will help participants communicate with clarity, power, and engagement.

Adeney is the author of over 200 articles and six books, including Kingdom Without Borders: The Untold Story of Global Christianity and Daughters of Islam: Building Bridges with Muslim Women.

Adeney has served on the boards of Christianity Today and Media Associates International, and has taught and mentored writers on five continents.

The “Art of Editorial Photography” workshop will be led by Gary Gnidovic, an award-winning photographer and designer. Gnidovic will show participants how to produce publication-worthy photographs. Participants will learn how to take a simple close-up portrait while making effective use of natural light, and how to capture the subject’s personality in a narrative or environmental portrait.

Participants will have the opportunity to practice what they learn during a short photo assignment, in which they may take simple or narrative portraits or a photo essay incorporating the five types of images described in the documentary photography workshop in the Crisis Publishing Initiative conference.

Gnidovic is an independent designer and photographer. He previously served as design director of Christianity Today magazine for 14 years. He recently completed a five-country photo journey documenting the plight of refugees from conflict in the Middle East. He has also done photo assignments in Russia, Cuba, India, and China, and has taught design and photography courses internationally.

These workshops will be offered simultaneously and registration is limited. The $35 tuition includes the workshop, coffee breaks, and lunch.
