A survey on the publishing industry conducted by the All Japan Magazine and Book Publisher’s and Editor’s Association’s Research Institute for Publications found that the estimated total sales for print and electronic publications in 2020 rose by 4.8% year on year to ¥1.6 trillion. The increase seems to reflect the greater amount of time people have been spending at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, the limited opportunities for entertainment, and the greater outlay on household activities.
Although sales of print publications (books and magazines) fell by 1.0% year on year, to ¥1.2 trillion, the decline was less than the 4.3% year-on-year decrease in 2019. Book sales decreased by 0.9% to ¥666.1 billion, while magazine sales declined 1.1% to ¥557.6 billion. Comic book sales in the tankōbon digest format, meanwhile, shot up by 24.0%.
Digital sales increased by 28.0% year on year to ¥393.1 billion, exceeding the 23.9% increase in 2019. Sales of digital comic books rose by 31.9% to ¥342.0 billion, while e-book sales climbed by 14.9% to ¥40.1 billion and sales of digital magazines increased by 15.4% to ¥11.0 billion. Sales of digital publications accounted for 24.3% of the entire publishing market, a rise of 4.4 percentage points over the 19.9% in 2019.
According to the Research Institute for Publications, the explosive popularity of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga lifted overall sales for publishing in 2020, including both print and digital publications.
