Discover how to apply sound business principles to establish your periodical on a solid foundation. During this eight-week course, David Renard, a partner with mediaIDEAS, and Francis Ayieko, founder and publisher of Nairobi-based Christian newspaper The Shepherd, will discuss good business principles to help your magazine succeed.
You will discover how to avoid common pitfalls and build your magazine on a firm foundation. You’ll learn the basics needed to launch a successful publication–or strengthen a current one–from growing your audience and developing a business strategy to researching your readers and moving from print to digital.
This course is the first in an online series in which you will gain an overview of magazine publishing, including a basic understanding of the elements of magazine business, editing, and design. The series will include an online course in each of these three main areas. You may choose to take one, two, or all three of the segments.
Those who complete each course will receive a certificate of completion for that course, but those who complete all three will receive a certificate of completion for the entire series.
Course topics include:
- Building a publishing model
- Finding readers in print and online
- Distribution and fulfillment
- Production fundamentals
- Funding and sustaining your publication
- Conducting audience research
- Developing a business strategy
- Overcoming the digital publishing hurdle and digital marketing
