Developmental editing: How to make good pieces great
September 28, 2023 @ 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM America/New York
Magazine editors, especially those working solo or in small teams, need to edit on multiple levels. Substantive editing of a feature piece can be the most crucial level of editing, working with the writer to identify the best way to start an article, uncovering the major themes and best angle, and leading the writer toward (or often doing it on behalf of the writer and reader) the hard, deep, but ultimately rewarding and essential work of revision at all levels.
In this free online workshop, Karen Stiller, senior editor of Faith Today magazine, will discuss how to best approach substantive editing of a piece, how to navigate this work with writers (we need to take care of the writer ego!), and how to ultimately find the very best way to present even tough issues in a compelling and readable magazine article that serves the reader and the goals of the publication.
