How do you put the pieces of magazine publishing together? An appealing, professional, and comprehensive magazine requires keen oversight and a committed team–whether online or in print. During this four-week course, Dr. Charles W. Christian, multimedia journalist, columnist, and news anchor and former managing editor of Holiness Today and Grace & Peace magazines, will provide an overview of the process of magazine assembly and editing.
Discover how to cast the vision and build the brand of your magazine. Learn how to work within a budget to determine your personnel needs and fine-tune your editing and distribution process. Charles will also address the special issues related to organizational structure and audience needs for editors publishing a denominational or organization-based magazine.
Course topics include:
- Week 1: Vision and branding of the magazine
- Week 2: Working within a budget to determine personnel (editorial team, designers, distribution, etc.)
- Week 3: The editing and distribution process
- Week 4: Special issues related to supervision and audience
Schedule
The schedule is flexible in order to meet the needs of each student. The only scheduled events are the weekly one-hour live sessions. If you are unable to attend live, you may watch a recording, which is available online anytime. The live sessions will be held on Mondays at 11:00 am EDT.
Course requirements
Background reading: Manual units and e-books
Live session: Attend a one-hour online live session with the instructor. All sessions are recorded. The recordings are available 24/7 within a few hours of the live event.
Forum discussion: Participate in the class forum by making comments and asking questions throughout the week.
Homework assignment: Complete and return the homework assignment by Friday each week.
Time required to complete coursework: Approximately five hours each week
MTI website: Class instructions and forums are available via this website in the MTIOnline free learning center. You may signup for a free membership at any time.
ClickMeeting: The online course live sessions are delivered via ClickMeeting. Each live session includes video and audio. You are not required to dial in by phone or download and install any software in order to attend the meeting. ClickMeeting provides the following system requirements in order to get the best experience from the workshop:
