magazine training

Magazine Training International (MTI) now offers two new opportunities for magazine publishers in developing countries to learn more about magazine publishing and pursue professional development online.

The MTIOnline program allows publishers to get the training they need at a price and time convenient to them. Although on-site training is still viable, the new online options make it possible to reach a broader international audience with more frequent and timely training.

To meet the international need for magazine training, MTI offers live workshops and four-week instructor-led online courses.

Since June 2013, MTI has offered four live workshops on digital publishing trends, magazine editorial structure, social marketing, and magazine cover design. The live workshops are offered bi-monthly and presented live. Participants in the live sessions have the opportunity to ask questions of the presenter. Each live workshop is recorded and made available on-demand. To date 145 Christians in publishing from 31 countries have attended a live workshop, either live or on-demand.

One attendee expressed gratitude for MTI’s newest training platform, saying, “I am just so grateful for the kind way MTI is so consistent and committed to help all the various folk out there in the field of writing, magazines, etc.”

The next live workshop will be offered in April by Rusty Wright, an award-winning author, lecturer, journalist and syndicated columnist. He will speak on “Influencing non-Christians for Christ Through Your Writing.” Wright has spoken on six continents to university students, professors, executives, diplomats and professional athletes. He’s appeared on television talk shows in cities around the world and also trains professionals in effective communication.

The online courses will be offered in spring and fall. Participants will have the opportunity to interact one-on-one with a professional editor, publisher, or designer who can help answer their questions, and provide a forum to exchange ideas among themselves. The instructor will guide the class through the material, offer feedback on assignments, and answer questions. A certificate will be awarded on completion.

MTI will launch its first instructor-led, four-week online course on “The Fundamentals of Magazine Design” on Feb. 24. The course will be led by Adele Mulford, managing art director at McMurry. Mulford served as art director for Discipleship Journal, was creative director at M. Media, her own design firm, and she worked with Journey Communications as art director for several Christian magazines. She received awards for her work from the Society of Publication Designers, the Evangelical Press Association, and Print magazine. She also taught design courses with MTI in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, India, and Malaysia.

MTI will continue to offer on-site conferences. The next training program will take place in Tiruvalla, India, January 2016, when MTI will offer two six-day publishing courses on magazine editing and magazine management. The courses will be offered with interpretation in Malayalam and Hindi.
