We are pleased to announce the conference site for the Magazine Publishing Institute in Nairobi, Kenya. The conference will be held 30 September – 6 October, 2018, at the CORAT Africa (Christians Organizations Research and Advisory Trust of Africa), a conference center for churches and church-related organizations.

In addition to conference and dining facilities, services offered by the hotel include a volleyball court, beautiful gardens, and a library with 20,000 books and periodicals. Nearby attractions include Nairobi National Park, Karen Blixen Museum, West Park Royal Health and Fitness Club, Giraffe Centre, Nairobi Animal Orphanage, and Bomas of Kenya.

Nairobi is Kenya’s thriving capital city, the safari capital of Africa, and one of Africa’s largest and most interesting cities. Museums and surrounding wilderness connect modern Nairobi to its past. Only 20 minutes from the city center is Nairobi National Park, which boasts 113 square kilometers of plains, cliffs, and forest, and is home to herds of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe, and more, including rhinoceros, cheetahs, and lions.

The seven-day Magazine Publishing Institute will consist of three separate tracks on magazine editing, magazine management, and magazine design. Each participant will enroll in a specific track, but daily plenary sessions will bring together all three tracks to show how each discipline influences and fits together with the others. Session topics include generating income, when and how to approach a redesign, solving manuscript problems, and much more.

This conference marks the start of a 10-year program in Africa. Although publishing professionals from over 200 African magazines have participated in MTI training over the years, this will be the first MTI conference in Africa. Future planned locations for Magazine Publishing Institutes include South Africa and Francophone Africa.
