SUMMARY:Introduction to Magazine Design
DESCRIPTION:Discover principles and tips to design an engaging publication that entices readers and communicates the magazine’s mission. During this six-week course\, Lea Greene\, publication content manager and designer for SACONNECTS\, and James Njoroge\, art director of Timazi\, will discuss how to design a magazine that draws your readers’ attention and makes a visual impact. \n\n\n\nYou’ll learn how the principles of legibility\, hierarchy\, contrast\, consistency\, and appropriateness influence the design of your publication. You’ll learn how a strategic plan to combine words and images will create a sense of purpose in each spread and how to evaluate your designs to see if a redesign is needed. \n\n\n\nThis course is the third and final in an online series in which you will gain an overview of magazine publishing\, including a basic understanding of the elements of magazine business\, editing\, and design. The series includes an online course in each of these three main areas. You may choose to take one\, two\, or all three of the segments. The prior two courses in the series are available as self-guided courses. \n\n\n\nThose who complete each course will receive a certificate of completion for that course\, but those who complete all three will receive a certificate of completion for the entire series. \n\n\n\nCourse topics include:\n\n\n\n\nTypography\n\n\n\nWords and images\n\n\n\nDesigning the spread\n\n\n\nDesigning the magazine cover\n\n\n\nPhotography for publication\n\n\n\nMagazine redesign\n\n\n\n\nRegister now \n\n\n\nScheduleSystem requirementsRegistration and feesSchedule \n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\n\nThe schedule is flexible in order to meet the needs of each student. The only scheduled events are the weekly one-hour live sessions. If you are unable to attend live\, you may watch a recording\, which is available online anytime. The live sessions will be held on Wednesdays at 10:00 am EDT. \n\n\n\nCourse requirements\n\n\n\nBackground reading: Book excerpts and articlesLive session: Attend a one-hour online live session with the instructor. All sessions are recorded. The recordings are available 24/7 within a few hours of the live event.Forum discussion: Participate in the class forum by making comments and asking questions throughout the week.Homework assignment: Complete and return the homework assignment by Monday each week.Time required to complete coursework: Approximately five hours each week. \n\n\n\nSystem requirements \n\n\n\nMTI website: Class instructions and forums are available via this website in the MTIOnline free learning center. You may signup for a free membership at any time.ClickMeeting: The online course live sessions are delivered via ClickMeeting. Each live session includes video and audio. You are not required to dial in by phone or download and install any software in order to attend the meeting. ClickMeeting provides the following system requirements in order to get the best experience from the workshop: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration and fees \n\n\n\nThere are two ways to participate. You may register for the full access to the course or you may choose to audit the course.  \n\n\n\n\nFull participants will have access to weekly live sessions\, reading material\, assignments\, personalized feedback\, opportunities for consulting\, and encouragement and interaction with other classmates in the forum. Upon completion of the course\, a certificate will be awarded.\n\n\n\nAuditors will only have access to the live sessions and reading material each week.
