Francis graduated from MTI’s Business of Magazine Publishing course in Kenya in 2018\, and served as a trainer for MTI’s Introduction to Magazine Publishing course in Côte d’Ivoire in 2019. \nDavid Renard is a partner with mediaIDEAS\, a global consultancy providing research and advice on the publishing industry’s technology-enabled future. He founded and built Netcirculation\, the largest nationwide distribution network for high-end boutique fashion\, art\, photography\, and design titles. And\, he co-created Stare\, a publishing and advertising agency. He also spearheaded a new European subsidiary that developed research-driven decision support tools\, which he grew into a multi-million dollar business. In demand worldwide as a speaker on digital publishing\, he also taught a digital publishing seminar for Magazine Training International in India in 2012\, and in the U.S. in 2015. \nLea Greene is an award-winning graphic designer from the suburbs of New York City. She is currently the publication content manager and designer for The Salvation Army Eastern Territory’s magazine\, SACONNECTS\, which tells the stories of The Salvation Army’s ministry throughout the territory. A BFA graduate of the School of Visual Arts in 2004\, she has worked on multiple types of publications\, including Home Furnishing News\, a business-to-business publication; Current Health and Science Spin; and educational publications with Weekly Reader. Additionally\, Lea has worked with high school students in creating and designing their high school yearbooks\, guiding them on design techniques and content creation. \nWhat you'll learn \nEditing\, design\, and management—skills in all of these areas are essential to the success of your magazine. He also spearheaded a new European subsidiary that developed research-driven decision support tools\, which he grew into a multi-million dollar business. In demand worldwide as a speaker on digital publishing\, he also taught a digital publishing seminar for Magazine Training International in India in 2012\, and in the U.S. in 2015. \nLea Greene is an award-winning graphic designer from the suburbs of New York City. She is currently the publication content manager and designer for The Salvation Army Eastern Territory’s magazine\, SACONNECTS\, which tells the stories of The Salvation Army’s ministry throughout the territory. A BFA graduate of the School of Visual Arts in 2004\, she has worked on multiple types of publications\, including Home Furnishing News\, a business-to-business publication; Current Health and Science Spin; and educational publications with Weekly Reader. Additionally\, Lea has worked with high school students in creating and designing their high school yearbooks\, guiding them on design techniques and content creation. \nWhat you'll learn \nParticipants will discuss their goals with trainers before the start of the workshop. SUMMARY:Introduction to Magazine Design
DESCRIPTION:Discover principles and tips to design an engaging publication that entices readers and communicates the magazine’s mission. During this six-week course\, Lea Greene\, publication content manager and designer for SACONNECTS\, and James Njoroge\, art director of Timazi\, will discuss how to design a magazine that draws your readers’ attention and makes a visual impact. \n\n\n\nYou’ll learn how the principles of legibility\, hierarchy\, contrast\, consistency\, and appropriateness influence the design of your publication. You’ll learn how a strategic plan to combine words and images will create a sense of purpose in each spread and how to evaluate your designs to see if a redesign is needed. \n\n\n\nThis course is the third and final in an online series in which you will gain an overview of magazine publishing\, including a basic understanding of the elements of magazine business\, editing\, and design. The series includes an online course in each of these three main areas. You may choose to take one\, two\, or all three of the segments.
